Blencowe scores yet another podium as torrential rain sweeps Donington Park
Alan secured yet another podium finish during torrential weather conditions
at Donington Park over the weekend, finishing 7th and 3rd in both races
respectively, maintaining 2nd in the drivers Championship with dropped
scores and is now looking for new sponsors to help him finish the remaining
4 rounds of the season and claim 2nd place if not 1st in the drivers
championship.
Qualifying on Saturday was dry, amidst reports of showers and storms and Alan’s first session saw him secure 2nd place on the grid
for race one, lining up beside current race leader Adam and 5th for race two.
Alan’s first race on Sunday was wet and conditions were worsening as they lined up on the grid. As the lights went out, Alan stormed
into the lead, followed closely by Adam and Breeze, who was unfortunately tapped and for the first time in Alan’s racing career the
race was red flagged - Breeze’s spun caused a further 5 class A cars to crash and an additional 6 from Class B - it is rumoured that
the accident has resulted in a total of 100,000 worth of repairs, several cars being written off at the scene.
At the re-start Adam guessed Alan’s tactics from the previous race start and being on pole had the inside racing line for Redgate,
which proved to be in his favour, as he led Alan through and onto the craner curves. Alan was a comfortable second place, and all
the action was happening behind him, until due to the wet conditions and turning and braking his wheels locked up and resulted in
his car automatically selecting Neutral, Alan was left with a car with no drive and had to watch in horror as his car continued to
aqua plain across the circuit until he could regain control of it,
"I couldn’t believe it, the slightest sign of the front wheels locking, meant that the car goes into safety mode and selects
neutral, as it thinks that the car is not moving, but what was frustrating is the car was moving, just aqua plaining on the amount
of standing water on the track! I felt so stupid losing second place, but there is nothing I could do about the gearbox selection,
at least I brought the car home safely in 7th place and gained valuable points for the championship."
In Race 2, the grid was depleted down to 14 cars in total due to the carnage in Race 1, and Alan although starting 5th on the grid
had only 2 cars directly in front of him.
As the lights went out, Alan’s start meant he was pushing up into a comfortable 3rd place and capitalized on the mistake by Adam to
take 2nd place, only to fall wide and slot back to 3rd place with Waterworth right up with him.
Throughout Race 2 it was clear that Alan was struggling with the car as Waterworth was close to taking 3rd place at several moments,
but after a few laps Alan pulled out enough of a lead to be in a comfortable 3rd place and a spot on the podium again!
"I struggled with the car in Race 2, the car seemed to understeer in certain places and oversteer in others. The wet weather
and torrential down pour of rain especially on the circuit hasn’t helped, but I do think that the set-up I choose to go with for
this race might have been wrong."
"1st place in the championship is still achievable at this stage, so I’m not
ruling anything out, I’m currently only a handful of points infront of
Fulvio with dropped scores - by only half a point!"
"I’m now looking for new companies to work with so that I can finish the remaining 4 rounds of the championship - all of my
current sponsors are still involved in the racing and they support me at different rounds of the championship, but in order for me
to be at the top of my game I need to find more companies who are willing to sponsor me, so that I can pay the team to run my car
each race weekend, as well as pay for the tyres at each round and all the components that we have to buy each round to make sure
that my car is competitive and fresh."
