Production S1 is run by the Britcar 24hr Championship and evolved due to the Willhire 24hr race in 1994 and that fact that there were no endurance races in the UK. Now the grid has swollen to hold a mass of 50 cars per race.

Famous names such as the late David Leslie, and other previous BTCC Champions such as Andy Rouse, Phil Bennett, Antony Reid and James Kaye have joined the rank of the Britcar phenomena. Most recently BBC's Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond entered the night race at Silverstone.
